Splunk does not require a specific port, rather it is leveraging existing protocols and their designations. This will be dependent upon many factors specific to each individual implementation. Below are a few examples:

  • HTTP
  • HTTPS:
  • Syslog
  • SNMP
  • WMI
  • .....

Addition details about each protocol and associate port with descriptions are availble via Wikipedia

He meant, are 8000 and 8089 going to make it into everyone's /etc/services someday. Since you're a fan of Wikipedia, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TCP_and_UDP_port_numbers.
